Meditation Classes in our Yoga Studio by Wellness Club

Meditation is a practice that trains the mind to reach a state of complete calm, relaxation, and peace. An ancient technique, meditation dates back thousands of years and has been shown to reduce stress and promote happiness. Nowadays, we are surrounded by stimulation, which can be overwhelming for the mind and body. With practice, meditation enables you to develop a new state of awareness, perspective, and concentration, allowing you to observe your senses without judgement. Through meditation, you will develop a deeper understanding of your thoughts and feelings, giving you the ability to be a more present person in all areas of life.

With that said, meditation is a skill. And learning to meditate is very similar to exercising a muscle in the body. It requires practice and focus to master, which can be attained through guided meditation classes in a studio setting. At Sea2Sky, we teach meditation in New Westminster to provide you with the support, guidance, and environment to help you explore this new practice. Through a combination of breathing techniques and mental exercises, you can improve the health of your brain and body.

Meditation Session 30 min

Meditation is a practice that involves training the mind to achieve a state of calmness and relaxation. It is a technique that has been practiced for thousands of years, and is often used to promote mindfulness, improve mental focus, and reduce stress and anxiety.

During meditation, the individual typically sits in a comfortable position with their eyes closed, and focuses their attention on a particular object, such as the breath, a mantra, or a visual image. The aim is to cultivate a state of deep relaxation and heightened awareness, and to quiet the mind by letting go of distracting thoughts and emotions.

There are many different types of meditation, including mindfulness meditation, guided meditation, and mantra meditation. Some forms of meditation involve movement, such as yoga or tai chi, while others are practiced in a seated or lying-down position.

Research has shown that regular meditation can have numerous health benefits, including reduced stress and anxiety, improved immune function, and better sleep. It can also help to improve cognitive function, increase emotional resilience, and promote a sense of well-being and inner peace.

Benefits of Meditation

Physical Benefits

Meditation offers techniques to help you relax and cope with stress in a healthy way. Stress results in elevated cortisol and blood pressure levels, which have a detrimental affect on the body. When experienced for an extended period of time, elevated stress levels can increase one’s risk for hypertension, heart attack, and stroke. So, gaining control over stress levels is vitally important for long-term physical health. By refocusing on the present, meditation gives you a break from the outside world and allows you to clear your mind of the everyday factors that contribute to your stress. There is also research to suggest that by meditating regularly, you can manage symptoms of conditions that are worsened by stress such as chronic pain, asthma, anxiety, cancer, irritable bowel syndrome, tension headaches, poor sleep, and more. Start your journey to attaining better physical health with meditation in New Westminster.

Mental Benefits

Meditation is incredible for the brain. This practice is shown to have significant neurological benefits, including a decrease in levels of anxiety and depression. In fact, studies have shown that regular meditation reduced feelings of depression to the same degree as taking anti-depressants. Meditation can also slow down the rate of aging in the brain, improve learning, and increase memory. It has also been shown to increase concentration and attention while reducing mind-wandering and self-referential thoughts, both of which are associated with a decrease in happiness. This is especially true for mindfulness meditation, which incorporates mental awareness as well as breathing to reduce feelings of stress and social anxiety disorder.

Emotional Benefits

Meditation can give you a sense of peace, calm, and balance. While this can reduce stress and relax your body, it also opens up space to explore your own mind. This includes gaining control over your emotions, which can have a powerful impact on your overall health. When unregulated, emotions move up, down, and side-to-side, which prompts your body to release a range of hormones in response. However, meditation can give you the tools to stay centred and focused, allowing you to control your emotions rather than let your emotions control you. Meditation will also teach you how to be comfortable with your own mind, giving you the ability to be present and fully engaged in the moment, while leaving space for rest when needed. Overall, you will gain further clarity of your own self and realize the power you have to create the life you want.

How to Start Meditating

Meditation can be done anywhere at any time. That is one of the marvellous things about it. There are benefits to meditating on your own and in a class setting; however, we believe that our guided meditation in New Westminster can elevate your experience and set you up for greater meditative success.

Meditating on your own allows you to focus on your own needs and preferences. You can choose the length of time, the style of meditation, and the time of day that works best for you. It offers more flexibility, so whether you are downtown Vancouver, in between classes at school, or working from home, you can still cultivate greater self-awareness, a deeper understanding of your own mind, and gain control over your thoughts and feelings.

That being said, if you are new to meditating, taking classes can give you deeper insight into the practice to reap the full benefits. At Sea2Sky, our teachers understand the practice of meditation and can guide you through the act, no matter which stage you are in. Our teachers can also provide personalized guidance and feedback to further your experience. Additionally, our meditation classes in New Westminster offer a sense of community and support that can be difficult to replicate in a solo setting. How to Meditate

  1. Find a quiet, comfortable space where you won’t be disturbed. You can choose to either sit or lie down, as long as you are in a comfortable position to allow your mind and body to relax.
  2. While optional, you may find it helpful to listen to a guided meditation session or relaxing music, especially as a beginner. However, you can meditate in silence as well if you prefer.
  3. Close your eyes or allow your gaze to gently focus on a spot in front of you.
  4. Take a few deep breaths, inhaling through your nose for 5 seconds and exhaling through your mouth for 5 seconds. This helps you tune into your breathing and become present with your body. Allow your breath to grow slower and deeper, and then let your body to fall back into its natural rhythm of breathing, whatever that feels like to you.
  5. Focus your attention on your breathing. Observe the sensation of the air moving in and out of your body.
  6. Should your mind wander, or thoughts arise, simply observe them without judgement. Picture them as clouds moving through the skies, passing by with no attachment to their placement.
  7. If you find yourself getting distracted by thoughts, feelings, or sounds, refocus on your breathing. And remember, there is no such thing as perfect when it comes to meditation. It is a practice.
  8. Continue to focus on your breathing for your preferred length of time. Whether that is 5, 15, or 30 minutes.
  9. When you are ready to end your meditation, take a few deep breaths and open your eyes gently. Allow yourself several moments to become resituated with your surroundings.
